Unwell and Undiagnosed? You’re Not Crazy - You’re Being Ignored by a Broken System

You’ve seen the doctors, the specialists.
You’ve done the labs.
They told you everything looks “normal.” And yet… you feel anything but what normal should feel like.

The fatigue won’t lift.
The brain fog makes you feel disconnected from yourself.
Your body aches for no obvious reason.
Your mood is unpredictable. Your sleep is off. Your weight is changing. Your skin is flaring.

Something feels wrong, but no one can seem to tell you why. Maybe you’ve been told it’s “just stress” or “just a normal part of getting older.” Maybe you’ve been dismissed, overlooked, or handed another prescription meant to manage the symptom without your doctor ever asking what’s causing it. You’re curious and you wish your doctor was curious too. 

Because you know, if your labs were “normal,” normal would mean:

  • You would feel grounded, not fragile
  • Calm, not volatile
  • Steady, not spiraling
  • Waking up refreshed, not exhausted 
  • Pain free periods, not needing to call out of work
  • Predictable cycles, not wondering where your period went
  • Stable moods, not dreading the week before your period bc your alter ego comes out
  • Satisfied after meals, not hunting for sugar an hour later
  • Stable blood sugar, not hangry and shaky
  • Comfortable after eating, not unbuttoning your pants by dinner
  • Regular, not pooping twice a week
  • At peace, not anxious for no reason

 

If that sounds familiar, hear this:

You are not broken. Your biology is out of balance and “normal” doesn’t always mean healthy. And it certainly doesn’t mean your hormones, blood sugar, cortisol, or other biomarkers behaved perfectly the other 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 50 seconds of the day they weren’t being tested.

A single blood draw is a snapshot, not the whole movie.

And sometimes, the problem isn’t your result, it’s how it’s being interpreted. 

 

Optimal ranges versus Normal Ranges: 

Being “within range” and being optimal are not always the same thing.

Many conventional reference ranges aren’t designed to tell you what’s optimal for you. They’re typically established using a reference population and can vary depending on the laboratory, testing method, age, sex, and the marker being measured.

These ranges are incredibly useful for identifying disease and significant abnormalities. But being inside a conventional reference range doesn’t automatically tell us whether that number is ideal for your age, sex, stage of life, symptoms, medical history, or individual physiology.

Context matters.

And that context continues to evolve as medicine does. Diagnostic cutoffs, clinical guidelines, and our understanding of what constitutes deficiency or insufficiency can change as new evidence emerges.

Take ferritin, the storage form of iron, for example.

Someone can have a ferritin result that isn't flagged by the laboratory and still have symptoms or other findings that warrant a closer look. Low or depleted iron stores can be associated with symptoms like fatigue, exercise intolerance, weakness, and hair shedding, even before someone develops overt iron-deficiency anemia.

That’s why I’m not satisfied with simply seeing that your ferritin didn't get a little red “L” next to it.

The same concept applies elsewhere.

A thyroid marker can fall within its reference range while your symptoms, thyroid antibodies, medications, or other thyroid markers provide important additional context.

Hormones are even more nuanced. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, and blood sugar aren't static numbers. They can change based on the time of day, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, medications, sleep, stress, meals, and when the sample was collected.

One “normal” snapshot doesn't necessarily tell us the whole story.

Your body doesn’t operate in isolated numbers—and neither should your healthcare.

This is why I don’t look at a lab result and simply ask:

“Is it flagged high or low?”

I want to know:

Is it appropriate for you?

Does it make sense alongside your other markers?

Does it fit your symptoms and your stage of life?

And what does the pattern tell us about how your body is functioning as a whole?

Because your labs can look perfectly “normal” on paper while you feel anything but.

 

Testing Beyond the Basics

What if the symptoms are early signs of dysfunction, not random noise? What if your body is whispering before it starts screaming? What if the root cause is hiding in systems that no one is testing?

Hormonal Imbalances – Often missed due to outdated lab testing or insufficient panels. This includes thyroid, cortisol, insulin, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and more. You may not be testing on the correct days of your cycle or the correct time of day. Maybe you need to do a specialized test that will map out your hormones for the entire month, etc., 

Mitochondrial Dysfunction - This can drive a lot of dysfunction and impacts your entire body as whole. Low cellular energy production can drives fatigue, brain fog, and immune suppression. If you have thyroid dysfunction this could be the missing piece. 

Nutrient Depletion - Hidden deficiencies in B12, iron, magnesium, zinc, omega-3s - despite eating "healthy" are extremely common in the U.S. Investigating what nutrients are insufficient or deficient using optimal lab values as well as investigating WHY your nutrient status is low (e.g., low stomach acid, absorption impairment in the gut, chronic infections) is important to the overall picture. 

Toxic Burden - We’re exposed to environmental chemicals every day through the air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, and products we use. Depending on your individual history and exposures, mold-related exposures, certain heavy metals, and other environmental toxicants may be worth investigating. Your body has built-in systems for processing and eliminating unwanted compounds through the liver, kidneys, gut, lungs, and skin, but exposure levels and individual susceptibility vary. You can’t expect a body to function at its best if you’re continually adding to its burden faster than it can effectively process and eliminate it.

Gut Imbalances & Leaky Gut - Conventional stool testing is typically designed to look for acute infections—pathogens like certain strains of E. coli, Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter, or parasites like Giardia that may cause sudden diarrhea or food-poisoning-like symptoms. 

A comprehensive stool analysis can go much deeper, looking at opportunistic bacteria, parasites, yeast, and the beneficial bacteria that make up your gut microbiome. Depending on the test, it can also give us insight into pancreatic function, digestion and absorption, intestinal inflammation, immune activity in the gut, and how well you’re breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Seeing which beneficial bacteria are abundant or depleted can also help make probiotic and prebiotic recommendations more targeted instead of simply guessing. This matters because your gut doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it’s intricately connected to your immune system, metabolism, nutrient status, and inflammatory response, meaning imbalances can show up as food reactions, skin issues, nutrient deficiencies, changes in bowel habits, and other symptoms that may never be uncovered by basic stool testing.

Blood Sugar Instability — Blood sugar can quietly disrupt your mood, energy, sleep, weight, cravings, and inflammatory response even if you don’t have diabetes. Conventional labs often check fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1C, which are valuable markers, but they don’t always give us the full picture. Looking at fasting insulin and, when appropriate, C-peptide can provide additional information about how hard your body is working to keep your glucose within range. In some cases, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can take this even further, allowing us to see your glucose patterns throughout the day and night—what happens while you sleep, when you wake up, after meals, during exercise, and in response to different foods. Instead of one snapshot, we get to see the pattern.

Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation — Your nervous system plays a major role in how your body responds to stress, and sometimes it can become stuck in patterns of excessive sympathetic—or “fight-or-flight”—activation or altered autonomic regulation. Unlike cholesterol or iron, there isn’t one simple blood test that tells us your nervous system is dysregulated. Instead, we can look at the bigger picture using your symptoms alongside tools such as heart rate variability (HRV), orthostatic heart rate and blood pressure measurements, and other autonomic assessments. Cortisol testing may provide additional information about your stress-response physiology and circadian rhythm, although cortisol alone does not diagnose autonomic dysfunction.

Why Functional Medicine Goes Beyond “Normal”

Functional medicine gives us the opportunity to zoom out.

Instead of asking only, “What diagnosis matches these symptoms?” I also want to know:

Why are these symptoms happening in the first place?

That means looking at your history, symptoms, lifestyle, environment, nutrition, stress, hormones, gut health, metabolic health, nutrient status, and appropriate laboratory testing—and then connecting the dots.

The goal isn’t to order every test imaginable or chase every slightly abnormal number.

It’s to figure out which pieces actually matter for you.

From there, we can build a personalized plan using nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and appropriate clinical treatment to address what we find.

Because managing symptoms can be important.

But whenever possible, I want to understand what’s driving them.

Your Symptoms Deserve an Explanation

If you’ve spent years hearing “everything looks normal” while knowing you don’t feel like yourself, don’t stop at that sentence.

Your symptoms are information.

They’re clues.

And sometimes getting answers requires someone willing to look beyond a single lab result and ask a much bigger question:
